Edged in white by 11 miles of coastline, Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island is considered one of the richest habitats in the Northeast. A birder’s and botanist’s paradise, the 2,039 acre preserve is known as the “Jewel of the Peconic” and covers a third of the island with interlacing tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, fields and freshwater marshes. All are welcome to hike one of the many marked trails. There is no entry fee, but you can play a role in the The Nature Conservancy’s long-term success by making a gift to our conservation work. Please note: the Visitor Center and restrooms are temporarily closed due to COVID-19 restrictions.
