The Shelter Island Historical Society interprets Shelter Island’s past through historical material and through its people, from the Native American inhabitants, settlers and town founders, to those who have made it a caring and unique community through the years. Founded in 1922 and officially chartered in 1966, the Society strives to preserve the Island’s heritage for future generations. The History Center, open Wednesday to Saturday, 10 AM to 2 PM, features seasonal exhibitions. The Society hosts numerous events, including the weekly Havens Farmers Market on summer Saturdays and summer children’s programs focused on local history.
