American Legion Mitchell Post 281 is the local chapter of the national organization. Its non-partisan mission is to provide service to active duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces and veterans, their families, and the community. Organizers meet the third Monday of the month, 7:30 PM at the American Legion Hall. The post, along with its active Ladies Auxiliary, maintains the Island’s war memorials, supports the active duty and veteran community, and hosts annual remembrances including events on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Members and guests also gather for meals and social events. The Legion Hall is located on the lower level of the bustling Community Center, home to a winter bowling league, recreation and social programs, and numerous charitable and community events.
