The Shelter Island Fire Department is a volunteer organization that provides emergency fire response to residents of the Town of Shelter Island and Village of Dering Harbor. A board of elected Fire Commissioners manages operations. An active Ladies Auxiliary provides additional support. Two stations are in use, the Center Firehouse located at 49 North Ferry Road, and the Heights Firehouse on Prospect Avenue. The Manhanset Station on Cobbett’s Lane holds the department’s collection of antique apparatus and other equipment. The SIFD annually hosts several fundraisers, including a Steak Dinner at the Center Firehouse in early spring, an early summer antique car show with the Shelter Island Historical Society, and a late summer Chicken BBQ under a massive tent on St. Gabriel’s Field. Numerous community gatherings also take place at the fire stations. Although volunteers are directly altered to fire calls, a system of horns strategically located around the Island still blares fire codes as a backup and to notify residents of a fire emergency. If you’re on the road and you hear the horn, get ready to make way for volunteers as they drop what they’re doing and rush to answer the call.
