The Lions Club motto is “We Serve“, and this simple phrase sums up the central purpose of Lions Clubs everywhere – voluntary service to their community, their nation, and the world. The Shelter Island Lions Club was chartered in 1950 and has remained a strong, vital club for 70 years, with approximately 90 current members. It provides support throughout the East End, Shelter Island, and around the world through the Lions Clubs International Foundation. A non-political, non-religious organization, the Lions Club welcomes adults who are committed to community service and the high ideals of Lionism. Annually, the club hosts a Citizenship Award Dinner; community picnic after Memorial Day ceremonies; golf outing at Gardiner’s Bay Country Club; summer Cornhole Tournament; snack stand at Shelter Island Bucks Collegiate Baseball games; children’s Snapper Derby, and Scallop Dinner. It supports local and international eye health initiatives; the Shelter Island EMS corps; school science and leadership programs; youth sports programs; families in need of food and fuel assistance; and other local charitable causes.
